Dare to Stream !
Everything You Wanted to Know about Compression, Transcoding, and Codecs
Jan Ozer
Doceo, Inc., Galax VA
|
|
|
While DVD remains the number-one distribution medium for event video, streaming media and other forms of electronic delivery are becoming more and more common, and not just for showing demos! Videographers are discovering and using supplementary delivery media for their productions as well as their demos, whether it’s wowing their clients with final product on a Video iPod, or serializing their concept videos on private websites for their clients’ friends and families before the big day.
Though compression plays a behind-the-scenes role in most audio/video productions, a thorough knowledge of how compression works will improve the quality of your productions and streamline your workflow. The codec landscape is changing all the time. Every time we look at the latest codec iterations, we get different results; first WMV is on top, then QuickTimenext time, will Flash will come out on top? Or MPEG-4? It’s a constant change!
There’s a lot to keep up with, and most videographers at best have only a slight understanding of what the codecs are, how they differ, and what will work best for them. EventDV’s own “Professor Compressor” Jan Ozer will help you understand transcoding and batch encoding for streaming, as well as the many different codecs and how and when to use them.
Jan will describe how various compression schemes work and where each fits into the typical production workflow, from acquisition to DVD, from streaming demos to iPods, PSPs, and even mobile phones. As the use of streaming media becomes more common in event video, it becomes even more vital to have a solid understanding of compression in its many facets.
